Study Overview

The Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center (ACNC) is investigating how fitness, diet, sleep, and activity levels
during childhood affect health in adolescence and young adults.

Study Eligibility

Adolescents and young adults aged 13 to 21 years who have previously participated in the Arkansas Active
Kids study or the MI Energy study, with a minimum 4-year gap between their initial and follow-up (recall)
visits.

What Does Participation Involve?

Visit to ACNC: Participants will attend a session at ACNC lasting up to 8 hours. This can be done in one visit or split into two. During the session, various health evaluations will be conducted, such as:

  • Blood tests and urine collection
  • Vital signs and body measurements
  • Body fat assessment
  • Ultrasound to check blood flow in the arm and fat in the liver
  • Measurement of calories burned at rest and physical fitness assessments

Ask Questions: We'll collect details on medical history, health status, medications, living conditions, puberty stage, diet, sleep habits, and any symptoms of anxiety or depression, as well as tobacco, alcohol, and other substance use.

Activity Monitoring: After the visit, participants will wear two activity monitors for 8 days. They will keep a diary of physical activities, sedentary behavior, and sleep patterns.

Sample Collection: Participants will provide stool samples, then return all samples and study materials, including the activity monitors and diaries, to the ACNC.

Compensation

Participants will receive $150 for completing the study. A $75 gift card will be given after finishing the in-person assessments, and the remaining $75 will be awarded upon completion of the at-home
assessments and return of all study materials.
