The BEE Power Study

The Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center is seeking volunteers for a research study examining how one session of isometric exercise (like squats and planks) or aerobic exercise (like walking briskly and running) affects the blood pressure of teenagers.
Study Eligibility
We are seeking children ages 13 to 17.5 years with a body weight that may be higher than recommended for their age and height.
Study Requirements
The study will have two groups: one group will do a session of isometric exercises, and the other group will do a session of aerobic exercises. The study includes three visits, with each visit lasting up to three hours.
Duration of study and visits:
First Visit:
- Up to 3 hours
- Activities
- Blood collection: around 4 teaspoons of blood
- Ultrasound of the arm
- Questionnaires about food intake, growth, substance use, mood, etc.
- DXA body scan to measure lean, fat and bone tissue
- Fitness testing
- Physical activity trackers
Second Visit:
- Up to 3 hours
- Activities
- Fitting of a blood pressure monitor, which the child will wear while sitting for around 1 hour.
- The child will then go home with the monitor and wear it for 24 consecutive hours.
Third Visit:
- Up to 3 hours
- Activities
- The child will participate in a session of exercise (either aerobic or isometric)
- The child will complete a questionnaire to evaluate the acceptability and enjoyment of the exercise session
Compensation
Participants will be compensated with $350 for their participation, with an additional $50 bonus if they successfully complete all the measurements.
