Neurofibromatosis Clinic
There are three types of Neurofibromatosis-NF1, NF2 and schwannomatosis. These disorders produce overgrowth of the nerve sheath and other neural components to produce tumors within the central and peripheral nervous system. These are all familial genetic conditions, but many cases result from a new genetic mutation with no prior family history. NF1 is the most common disorder, and can be recognized in infants and young children. This clinic includes participation by Neurology, Genetics, Neuro-oncology and Neuropsychology, and many children are also followed by Neurosurgery, Neuro-ophthalmology, Dermatology, Plastic Surgery and/or Orthopedics.
Medical care for children with NF treated in our clinic includes:
- Genetic diagnosis and counseling
- Developmental and cognitive screening and testing
- Tumor screening and treatment including optic pathway tumors and plexiform neurofibromas
- Seizures
- Headaches
- Bone health
