Michael Schmitz, M.D. is a Professor of Anesthesiology in the UAMS College of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, practicing at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Schmitz received his medical degree from the University of California in San Francisco.  He completed his Anesthesiology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia in Critical Care at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  He is board-certified in Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Pediatric Anesthesiology.

Dr. Schmitz joined Arkansas Children’s Hospital in 1992 and currently serves as the Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology, Vice Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Vice Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine.  He was awarded the Log A Load for Kids of Arkansas Endowed Chair in Congenital Cardiac Disorders in 2019.

His most recent research interests have focused on cefazolin safety for pediatric subjects scheduled for surgery and safety and pharmacokinetic study of opioid administration in pediatric subjects with post-operative pain.  Dr. Schmitz also collaborates with his colleagues at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in studies of the effects of anesthetic agents and surgery on brain development on pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
