The Varisco Lab is focused on understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms of development, injury, repair, and remodeling in the postnatal lung with a special emphasis on strain-mediated lung matrix remodeling. Disease studied have included congenital diaphragmatic hernia and fetal tracheal occlusion, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome, and diseases of progressive emphysema such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, and age-related alveolar simplification. By understanding the specific cells and mechanisms of pathological lung remodeling, Dr. Varisco’s team aims to develop novel therapies to improve lung health across the lifespan.
